Course Aim: This unit of competency, RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights, is designed for individuals working in construction sites where tasks are performed 1.5 meters or higher from ground level. Fall protection measures are required to comply with current WHS regulations. The course is essential for those involved in construction, renovation, refurbishment, or maintenance work on both domestic and commercial sites.

Application of the Unit:

This training applies to various construction activities, ensuring that workers are equipped to undertake their duties in a safe and compliant manner. The course provides the necessary skills and knowledge to work at heights with fall protection, preparing workers for a range of site conditions.

Certification:

Upon successful completion, students will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), issued by Savsply Registered Training Organisation (RTO) 91583. In addition to the statement, a Photo ID card will be produced as proof of competence.

Course Content:

The course covers a wide range of topics that equip participants to work safely at heights. This includes both theoretical knowledge and practical exercises. The key topics include:

    • Rail systems
    • Carabiners, rope, and wire grabs
    • Rescue equipment
    • Shock absorbers
    • Snap hooks
  • Ladders and Administrative Measures: Proper ladder usage and associated safety protocols.
  • Current Legislative Requirements: Understanding WHS legislation related to working at heights.
  • Work Requirements and Defect Identification: Determining work requirements and identifying equipment defects.
  • Inspection of Work Sites: Learning how to inspect work areas for potential hazards.
  • Authorized Personnel Instructions: Following safety directives issued by supervisors.
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) & Scaffolding: Safe use of scaffolding and understanding safety data sheets.
  • Tool and Equipment Usage: Handling tools and equipment specific to working at heights.
  • Manual Handling: Safe manual handling practices to avoid injuries.
  • Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) & Job Safety Analysis (JSA): Creating and following SWMS and JSA for height-related tasks.

Course Delivery:

The course is presented using an animated PowerPoint displayed via an LCD TV or projector, complemented by a student workbook, handouts, course videos, and demonstrations. Practical exercises and written tasks are conducted as part of the assessment.

Since 1 January 2015, all students undertaking nationally recognized training must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). The USI provides access to an individual’s training records and results and is required for course enrolment. You can apply for your USI online at www.usi.gov.au.
