Introduction

The Gold Card Training Program is designed for individuals who need to acquire the skills and knowledge to safely operate Telescopic Materials Handlers (Telehandlers). This course provides instruction on the safe use of various types of Telehandler and attachment combinations that do not require a High-Risk Work (HRW) license.

About This Course

Participants can complete modules tailored to the specific Telehandler and attachment combinations they will operate, including:

  • Forks (F)
  • Crane Jib (J)
  • Earthmoving Bucket (B)
  • Other (O) – covering attachments such as bale grabs, work platforms, sweepers, etc.

Course Overview

This course is for Telehandlers with a lifting capacity of 3 tonnes or less and includes various attachments such as:

Note: Telehandlers over 3 tonnes in NSW or those with certain attachments may require a full SafeWork crane licence (e.g., CN, C2, WP).

Compliance & Safety Requirements:
Under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act and Regulations, operators of plant and equipment must undergo proper instruction and training. Businesses have a legal duty of care to provide a safe work environment, and an TSHA (telescopic handler Association Gold Card serves as evidence that Telehandler operators have been properly trained. It ensures:

  • Operators have received training in the safe use of Telehandlers.
  • Employers, suppliers, and users have documentary evidence that WHS obligations have been met.

Course Content Includes:

  • Equipment inspection upon arrival.
  • Working safely around power lines and understanding wind conditions.
  • Conducting site inspections and identifying hazards.
  • Using the operator’s logbook.
  • Understanding safety decals, operators’ manuals, and compliance plates.
  • Pre-operational checks, including load charts.
  • Understanding operator duty of care.
  • Safe practical operation of the equipment.
  • Theory and practical assessments.

Upon successfully completing the assessment, participants will receive a Digital Gold Card that can be added to your phone’s wallet Trained Operator” Gold Card for the Telehandler type they’ve been trained on.

Knowledge Evidence

Students must demonstrate competence by mastering:

  • Proper lifting techniques to minimize wear and tear on equipment
  • Efficient driving and engine power management strategies
  • Forklift controls, instruments, and handling procedures
  • High-risk work licence requirements and operating hazards
  • Pre-operational and shutdown checks, and emergency procedures
  • WHS environmental procedures
  • Workplace duty of care and relevant regulations

All individuals in a workplace have a responsibility to ensure safety. The PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) must minimize risks, including those posed by vehicles or machinery. Warning devices should be used when operating mobile equipment to protect those nearby.

Once Ready For Assessment

An assessor is organised for both theory & practical assessment for a LF Forklift Licence, Safework NSW is to be given 48 hours-notice prior of any assessment for audit purposes.

Course Delivery

The course is presented using an animated PowerPoint displayed via an LCD TV or projector, complemented by a student workbook, handouts, course videos, and demonstrations. Practical exercises and written tasks are conducted as part of the assessment.

Note:  All students will require a Unique Student Identifier Number USI

From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking nationally recognised training delivered by a registered training organisation you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes studying at TAFE or with a private training organisation, completing an apprenticeship or skill set, certificate or diploma course.

A USI gives you access to your online USI account which is made up of ten numbers and letters. It will look something like this: 3AW88YH9U5.

A USI account will contain all your nationally recognised training records and results from 1 January 2015 onwards. Your results from 2015 will be available in your USI account in 2016.

When applying for a job or enrolling in further study, you will often need to provide your training records and results. One of the main benefits of the USI is that you will have easy access to your training records and results throughout your life.
