Course Aims

To provide persons that have completed the 5-day WorkCover NSW OHS Consultation Course with, the understanding of the new Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, how it applies to their role as an elected member of a workgroup.

Learning outcomes of this refresher course are that participants will have the knowledge and skills to describe the WHS legislative framework and key changes in WHS terminology, Changes in duties under WHS legislation, Requirements for consultation, representation and participation on work health and safety issues.

Work Health and Safety Framework.

  • WHS framework and new terminology.
  • Duty holders and their duties.
  • Role and function of WorkCover and Penalties under the WHS Act.

Consultation, Representation and Participation.

  • Consultation requirements under WHS legislation.
  • Workgroups and election of HSRs.
  • Roles and responsibilities of HSRs and Health and Safety Committees.
  • Role of inspectors in the consultation process.

Role of the HSR, Issue Resolution and Support.

  • Role of HSRs in consultation, assisting workgroups and as a member of a HSC Investigating complaints, and Issue resolution and support for HSRs.

Risk Management Monitoring and Notifiable Incidents.

Key requirements of risk management; Monitoring and review of risk controls; and Notifiable incidents.

Provisional Improvement Notices and ceasing unsafe work.

  • Purpose and function of PINs, Role and requirements for HSRs to issue PINS and process for issuing a PIN, Disputes and resolution; Directing unsafe work to cease.
  • The course should also assist in the development of appropriate attitudes to enable HSRs to effectively carry out their functions under WHS Legislation. Persons attending this WHS Consultation course must request this training from their Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU).
  • The course is face to face using PowerPoint presentation complete with all WHS Consultation course material required to complete this course that include course notes, copies of relevant legislation, case studies and assessment tools.
  • This WHS Consultation course is an WorkCover NSW course and must meet the requirements of WorkCover NSW training package. Participants will need to complete all Topics as set out in the course guide provided by WorkCover NSW. On completion of this WHS Consultation course, participants will receive a certificate approved by Work Cover NSW.
